Thane, maybe you will know but I cannot find anything on controller support for the DFM. Will it be mouse and keyboard or will we have Joystick and HOTAS/Rudder pedal support.

We were told that they would all be usable. I'll see if I can find where I read up on it.

Don't forget Oculus Rift and TrackIr. I doubt I get the Rift but I've got a TrackIr on my Wish List on Amazon. I may pick one of those up.

I've been pondering just how I want to control my ship. I'm almost certain I do not want a joystick and throttle setup. If I go the joystick route I think I'm going to go dual joysticks. Viewing the cockpit of my Hornet it looks like it has dual joystick controls and not a throttle.

I just can't picture it being beneficial having one hand dedicated to a huge throttle control, and then bouncing your hand back and forth between other controls and a throttle stick if you are constantly speeding up and slowing down. At least flying in PS2, W & S control throttle but you've got other functional keys just right there within easy reach.

I know mouse and keyboard works pretty well for ESF in PS2, but I'm sure the fighters in SC are going to have a lot more freedom of movement. Especially if you turn off the Intelligent Flight Control System (IFCS).

I've seen some people say mouse is better for aiming and joystick is better for maneuvering. This makes me think that joystick movement is an all or nothing kind of thing, much like an analog button. I fly in PS2 with pretty high mouse sensitivity so I can pull maneuvers off with very little mouse movement. I've also got pitch and roll bound to my mouse thumb buttons (Razer Naga, 12 thumb buttons) so that I can do these movements to their fullest without moving my mouse at all if I need to, but then use my mouse movements for when I need to make more subtle movements.

I've never used a joystick before so I don't actually know how they work. I understand generally how they will operate, but like I stated before I don't know if they are an analog or digital control.

I can't wait for DFM so we can start finding out for sure!

    What have you got Wargrunt?

I'm leaning towards some of the later editions of the Saiteks if I decide to go joystick route. I think I'm going to wait until DFM releases and get some first hand feedback on control types from people before I settle on something for sure, as well as getting my own feel for how the ships control.

The Thrustmaster Warthog is pretty pimp but I don't think it's practical. More than just control types I want to ensure I have enough processing power to push out some decent frames. At ~$500 for a Warthog HOTAS I think I'd rather scale back a bit in that department and invest a little more towards my GPU.

My current setup is more than capable of running the game but I'm definitely going to do a complete overhaul once the official game releases. I could realistically stick with what I've got and slap some more RAM and either upgrade GPU or grab a second GPU and be fine.

I've also seen some people talking about game pads that have a small thumb joystick on them. That's an interesting thought, especially if you don't have a lot of desktop real estate to work with.

i have the saitek x52 pro its fun but with any advanced joystick it gets prgressively harder to learn to use them but once you do you can do great stuff

    $43 Thrustmaster HOTAS > All.

This is my message to all the space cadets:
It's not the expansive joystick that makes a good pilot, it's his wingman ;)
