Is Battlefield 3 Losing Momentum?

Its no secret that in the past few week Battlefield 3 has lost some momentum. With the release of a few large titles players have directed more attention to the “newest and greatest” thing, rather than stay loyal to what will shape up to be a game for the record books.

We at NNG wont speak on DICE’s behalf and tell you that there will be a saving grace to BF3. What we can say is that although large portions of fan base is slowly fading away, we as a community will remain.

Lets first start out by stating what we know about DICE.
DICE has been and seemingly always will be a little oblivious on timing when it comes to game content. Although they have always been good about supporting their titles long after their release, DICE has been known to push some of their fans away (or though it seems). The release of the Back to Karkand map pack in many players opinion was a little premature.
The game hadn’t been out for more than two months when the well put together expansion was released yet it seemed as though perhaps it should have been released with the game on launch. Although many players aren’t holding their breath for the next map pack, one has been said to be in the works. Yet hasn’t DICE promised us many things that we still haven’t seen? For example, in game VOIP was promised in the very beginning yet just last month a DICE dev was reported to have said that the game will not support VOIP due to “developmental decisions” . Also promised and even advertised on the Battlelog log in page was a Battlelog app for smart phones. Well after the most recent DICE dev live interview, that has also been put on hold after one of the DICE devs was quoted saying. “If the community calls for it, we may look into it.” May look into it? Advertising a mobile app to this day on your home page doesn’t really seem like a good idea if it isn’t really in the game plan don’t you think?
So DICE has promised quite a few things but not delivered. Is this the reason BF3′s player base is dwindling away?
Maybe not. The most recent large title in the making for quite some time was released only a few weeks ago. But are the same PC gamers that fight the good fight, that shoot helicopters out of the sky, that lead tank battalions head on into their inevitable end, the same players who tell storm trooper “these arent the droids your looking for”?
Star Wars The Old Republic (or SWTOR as their fan base calls it) had been in development for what seemed like forever. With the less recent Star Wars games being a single player tragedy, were the Star Wars fans only playing BF3 in hopes that SWTOR would use the force to pull them away from all their qualms? Although its still unknown if SWTOR will be part of the reason BF3 fans fad away. What is known is that SWTOR has done very well thus far. The subscription MMO takes players into the world of the force, thousands of years before Episode 1. Players choose from many classes to play what seems like the same material over and over just to level their character. There are two main story lines to the game, that of The Dark Side and that of The Force. Both story lines promise hundreds of hours of game play. Yet its hard to believe that this is why BF3′s server become more and more empty. All additional infor on Star Wars The Old Republic can be found here.
Although it has not been released yet, another game hides in the shadows just waiting to steel players from BF3.
Diablo III has finally gotten a solid release date. Having been a crowd favorite in the past, the most recent Diablo game seems as though it will live up to its predecessor. Diablo II was known best for its fantasy based game play. Having been released in 2000, it quickly became popular due to its free online game play. Although Diablo II excelled in many aspect it lacked in one major aspect. That being a story. Diablo III has had many trailers debuting in the past months, inferring a much better story this time around. To find out more about Diablo III click here.
Staying on the fantasy train, there is one other large contender to BF3. If you like hairy dudes who sound like the ex governor of California, and if you like non-consensual sex with dragons, Skyrim may be for you. Skyrim takes you through the Nordic world of, you guessed it, Skyrim. Playing the role of “The Dragon Born”, you embark on the extremely long lasting quest to…well really to just kill Dragons. Although the game actually never ends (it regenerates random quests) the main story lines is said to take around 46 hours to complete. Having played this game, I can conclude that although being very addicting in the beginning you find yourself wondering what you are really doing in Skyrim. This automatically started making me think about my own life and what my real purpose was. Long story short a ton of heavy drinking later, I have still not returned to the world of Skyrim. Well if you have made it this far in this article I commend you and I will reward you with a prize. Having spent all this time reading this article on why BF3 has a dwindling fan base and not actually playing the game…You are now the reason why BF3 is loosing its luster. Well I guess because I wrote this its my fault too…Oh whatever just go play the game.
