Hey guys, i have a tech question. Im posting this here in our PS2 area because you guys are the only NNG I know and therefor I trust your advice more than others.

My question(s) is about internet connection speed and computer speed.

A long time ago, I loved to conc jump in TFC (Think grenade assisted jumping or CONCussion grenade jumping)
Youtube video of people conc jumping:

I would love to see medics in PS2 get conc nades!

In TFC, I would hear people rave about how fast their internet was and how they would get really good (low) pings. I dreampt of having a T2 (12 phone lines right?) someday....Some people talked about FPS but ping was king at the time. Now in PS2 I never hear people talking about ping.
Is there a way to find out my ping to the PS2 servers?
I know FPS is a good way to measure performance but if you don't have a good connection to the internet, you will have a hard time gaming (right?). I usually run about a 25M download speed on speedtest.net but only a 1m upload.
How important is upload speed in PS2?
How does internet connection speed effect FPS and game play?
How is it that when the game lags, people blame it on the server (this seems crazy to me) Is it really a server side problem?
What is the fastest type of internet connection in America today and what company sells it?
Anyone know any tricks or tips for boosing internet speed (WiFi and hard line)?
( ) <---youtube video of...well please dont try this, thats all im going to say.

A long time ago my dad worked for L3, he took me in the Denver gateway, I remember 6 foot tall racks of routers and hardware. There were countless rows of racks that I was told were worth millions. Fiber was brand new at the time and I always wondered what it would have been like to jack directly into a gateway.

    To find out your ping do the following;
    Open a command terminal
ping 199.108.194.38 (May have changed, may change in future)
That is the IP address for Mattherson, atleast it was last time I checked. 1mb upload speed is plenty, you can get away with half a mb.

Try that link, it improved my speed by a little bit so may be worth going through.
May be a silly question but your computer is using the wired in connection? Another odd thing with some motherboards is if the usb ports that are closest to the ethernet port are being used it can sometimes cause a drop in speed.

    Its not at all.

Internet should not effect FPS to any degree. The graphics engine should not be directly waiting on network responses.

Game play wise, bandwidth has virtually no impact as long as you can transfer all the data (ie you're not on dialup). Latency does effect game play, but Planetside 2 uses client side registering so the impact is fairly small.

The most common place where it comes into play is when you're trying to run to cover, such as going back through a door and hide around the corner. If two people whose latencies are 300ms and 30s start moving on their machines at the same time, the player with 300ms ping will be exposed approximately 270ms longer than the person with 30ms.

Its entirely possible for servers to be problematic; its even likely when a game is just released. When a server gets overloaded all sorts of synchronization problems can happen. For example, damage done to a target wont go through or if it does it will be significantly delayed. During that time the target, that should have been dead, can continue to do things (ie kill you!).

The position of players is another thing dependent on the server. Every so often the game sends you data with updated players positions. To make the game more fluid, players continue traveling at the same speed and direction until the next update. This normally works well but if the server starts to lag the positions aren't updated fast enough and you'll start seeing people run through walls or magriders flying in the air.

Varies widely by where you live, but the fastest I know of is 1Gbps from Google (called Google Fiber).

Always use hard line if you can. That said, PS2 isn't a ping sensitive game so it shouldn't matter. Its also worth noting that the vast majority of lag comes from the stuff in between you and the server.

Yes this game uses client side registering which is why you can get shot through walls by people who jack up their latency
Because on their screen you are still visible while on your screen you have moved.

That being said check out this nifty geeks toy http://sejent.com/

My download speed is 1meg, my upload is about nothing. You don't need upload, just CPU power :P

Thank you all for the good posts and links! I had no idea internet speed mattered so little now a days. I use a cable modem from my local cable company. Its now almost 5 am here and I want to learn more but I have to be up in 3 hours. Thanks for the good links. I will try to tweek my internet speed a little tomorrow, but I also want to learn more about overclocking. I think Im ready to start overclocking a little. My next computer upgraded is the CPU but Ill need a new MB to get the one I want. Thanks again everyone.
