The NoNonsenseGamers Lottery (Possibility)

    Each week or month (depending on what you guys think) we have a drawing for a $15 wal-mart SOE game card.

    Minimum of two entries per participant = $5 for two entries
    +$2.50 for any consecutive entries (e.g. 3 entries = $7.50, 4 entries = $10.00)

    Members/participants can send money via Paypal to an account/fund I have set up for this lottery drawing. I will perform the drawing via web recording live or upload a youtube video. I may, more than likely, have access to a bingo/lottery machine where i could assign numbers to names. Like all lotteries, this is intended to run a profit so proceeds go to NNG site, community and/or outfit expenses. If it starts to be NNG paying out of pocket for cards the lottery will cease.

    I will check my state's gambling laws... there is also a Native American reserve near my location that I could go stand in the parking lot and do this :7 jkjk

    I figure you would be fine because all the proceeds are going to NNG and not for personal gain.

    From what I've read its either:
    1) just straight illegal (like MA)
    2) illegal only if house takes cut (as is suggested)

    That said, I dont think anyone would care. Even if they did I'd imagine they'd tell you to stop, not fine you. Laws are more about prevention and control than punishment.

    Football pools are still super common. I know a bar that has a large amount of players, $10(or $20?) buy in, AND they take a 10% cut. Basically, it has no issues despite being illegal in every way. I'm sure several of the players are cops too.

    As with most lawyery things, it's all in the way you word it. For instance: "Come play the NNG lottery! $5 a ticket! You could win cookies and cheesecake!" would more than likely raise some red flags. However: "Come support NNG and make a donation to keep our servers going! Any donation over $5 will enter you into a drawing for cookies and cheesecake as our way of saying thanks!"

    As long as you're clear that the money is just a donation to keep things running and the "prize" is a thank you gift to one lucky contributor to encourage donations. Also, keep a paper trail showing that all money collected is going to NNG. It might be best, in this case, to buy the cards on your own expense, then put aside the same amount from the donations to go to "marketing," using that to reimburse yourself, as truthfully, it's just marketing that you're doing.

    If you're looking for a draw idea, I had a lottery going in GW2 for a while, with an intricate spreadsheet system. Basically, people type a bunch of one digit numbers, and the first ten are used to come up with the winning three digit number. I hate math, but I enjoy making a buck, so it works out.
