P.S. we need maps to work with.

We need to name buildings and such. I hate having to say "bad guy in that low building by C, the one on the same side as D." I'd MUCH rather say something like, "bad guys in Boone's Strip Club," or "tank outside Slowride's School for the Slow."

Thought about doing this. The tricky part is balancing between being too specific and too general. It could have turned into a cluster fuck of knowing a thousand building/structure names, with people being ordered to the wrong areas. Otherwise it could be useless, Boone's strip club could be a huge area, and calling them out as being in that area could be too unspecific to be useful.

If only they kept the grids on the map... We could just use grids like in BF2. So sad... For now I just tend to keep track of squad mates and try to use the compass to call people out relative to their location.

When I was running with the H2O group on Xbox we would designate areas like G for a general area and 1 for the floor meaning Gold room Floor 1. We could use this on BF3 for maps but we would pobably just have to use the buildings as numbers, like the office on D in Firestorm could be D1 and the construction could be D2-E with E designating that it is on the eastern one of the two buildings. It's plain, simple, easy to say, and gets the job done.

    Something like that could work.

I'm curious to hear from the military peeps as well. I've always been under the impression that there were 3 types: grids, unit relative directions, and nautical directions. On the large scale, grids are used. On the small scale, directions could be called relative to the units movement direction (contact right) or if the unit is static, directions called out using the NSEW.

Grids are good but only if the map has a grid already otherwise you have to keep a picture of the map or memorize the entire map and thats not a very easy thing to do, and using the NSEW I find a bit iffy because its a broad area and I'd see it more useful if it were to give information on a distanced target or a general heads up like saying "Tanks coming from the South."

To be honest, I never know what's NSEW on these maps. I found a link to IMGUR pics with maps and points. I'll download them when I'm home. Then it would be easy for everyone to remember NSEW by keeping in mind that on map "X" N is towards Echo.

As far as buildings, in the vast majority of cases "C construction" is fine. I'm thinking about the ones that aren't that simple to describe. I'm thinking about Kharg right now... at C (offices along shoreline) there is a low building at the flag - "C building" Duh. At the end of the street there's an identical building. THAT would be Boone's Strip Club since I once saw a tranny running out of there.

That is where the letter and number system works. Just a quick look at the map with everyone to get the code set and you're good to go.

Yeah the grid is a non starter, just reminiscing about BF2.
