I did it more than twice when I was first starting out.
If you like flying, stick with it and it will be more rewarding than kills in any other game you've ever played before.

Well, 10GB later I managed to get on for about an hour and a half and here is what I learned:

    1. How to die (a lot)
    2. How to shoot (even got a few kills)
    3. How to get pissed off at snipers
    4. How to get revenge on snipers by emptying a shotgun into their face
    5. How to get run over by my own team
    6. How to heal and repair
    7. How to stand over a corpse and click a button while yelling "Why won't you revive" (seriously it took me over an hour to realise you need to press Aim to revive -.- )
    8. That I like most of the classes in different ways, the medic has appeal and since we were heavily on the defensive he got a lot more use than the engineer. And I've always loved being the sneaky sniper scout, so I'll probably switch between those 3.
Still a bit unsure about how my computer copes with the game, it's a decent computer and it seemed to run fine on medium graphics, but when we got pushed back to our last outposts and there was a LOT of people fighting in one place my framerate dropped like a stone....however my framerate had also dropped a bit before that because of bad connection so more testing is needed.

Will be on tomorrow evening from about half 6-7 ish BST

please please please please please, for the love of jesus kittens boobs and beer, don't listen to any arsehat saying that X takes no skill, or Y is overpowered. you use what you want. that's my biggest tip. also there are tons of performance threads to get you going. you can trial any weapon from the screen by clicking unlock, and try now at the bottom as long as you're alive. trying them is easier than going to VR training, because combat experience. and probably the best thing to get for the medic besides leveling up your medigun is revive grenades. after you've gotten your optics and your othersuch, i would consider blowing the 400 on those. any indoor fight leaves piles of dead people, and all you need to do is chuck one of those in.

just, don't forget to equip them before chucking.

Well, after over 1,000 hours in game, this still sounds pretty similar to my daily experience with PS2 lol.

As far as the performance aspect goes, I play on a toaster, so I've had to do some serious tweaks to squeeze every fps I can out of the game to remain somewhat competitive in large fights. There are, as Codex said, many threads and a lot of available resources for adjusting your graphics to get the best performance out of the game. Some of them are a little counter intuitive but they work. A quick and easy boost in game is to turn shadows and flora off and lower your render distance considerably. It definitely makes the game look worse but you will see a pretty good increase in your fps. I actually run my render distance ridiculously low, around 1100 since enemies don't really render any further than that anyways. In biolabs and other enclosed infantry fights, I'll actually drop it to the bare minimum.

PS2 can be a frustrating experience to start with. Hell, I ran around getting farmed for about four months (or longer) before I started actually learning what the hell to do and what not to do. It's great fun when you get in with a good team and start stomping some ass though - or in PS2 terms "dunking on shitties".

If you ever want to drive or fly a well certed vehicle to test it out or check out what different loadouts do in the field, feel free to hit me up and I'll pull ya whatever you want to try out.

One of the ways to improve performance is to lower the amount of pre-rendered frames to 1. With nvidia GPUs this can be done in the nvidia control panel and the 3d application settings. You can set up a profile for ps2 in there.

This improves performance by taking work off the cpu and putting it on the gpu. Planetside 2 is one of the games which is very CPU intensive. A lot of people will take severe fps drops in large fights. You have to remember that there can easily be 200+ players in one area for a large fight. That's a lot of work for your computer to account for. Optimisation threads will mostly work on reducing the amount of work the cpu has to do, because like I said, the work piles up when the player count goes up.
Pretty much everyone deals with these problems so don't worry about it. But making some changes can definitely make the difference in getting you closer to 30 fps or above in big fights.

Thanks guys, I'll be sure to give those performance tweaks a go, I run a decent Nvidia GPU so it probably is the CPU causing the frame drops. It actually did ok when this moment happened,

"Ok outpost defended I'll move on...wait there's a sunderer better take that out.....WOW that's a lot of troops....is that a bullet flying towards my face"

Managed troops in the 10's ok, it was when we were defending our last major tower it went a bit crazy.

Anyway I'll be on tonight so will tweak it a bit, I'll pop on TS as well :)

Inter-outfit Ops Night, Einstein's brainchild, where a bunch of the Vanu outfits coordinate together under one force commander. I think last time we had 5 platoons?
