So recently they released the RSI Constellation advertisement video. Along with this video came 4 very distinct variants of the Constellation.

Andromeda - The default and standard varient of the Constellation. Basic package with the Snub Merlin fighter included.
Taurus - The "shipping" varient of the constellation. A ship stripped down to the bare essentials and a huge increase in cargo space.
Aquila - The exploration varient. Long range scanners and sensors. The Merlin is replaced by the Ursa Rover. Think of the Moon Rover.
Phoenix - The "luxury" varient. Basically the Andromeda with more style. Wooden tables and full kitchen. Also the main bed is like a king-size. There are some better armaments and the Merlin is replaced with the Archimedes snub fighter. Which hasnt been shown yet.

I know only a few of us currently have the Connie in our hangers. I'm considering upgrading to one of the non-default varients and I'm having a hard time choosing. I'm just curious to see what everyone's 2-cents are if you have any. Opinions are welcomed and appreciated.

I know there was a lot of hell raised on the official site about the Phoenix. A lot of people were confused about its role and some outraged over the price of it. I haven't looked in about a week or so but from what I gathered it is a "luxury" ship, but that extends beyond just cosmetics. It supposedly has higher grade weapons, engines, scanners, shields, etc. I guess straight out of the box it may(?) be better suited for combat than the other variants.

I don't personally have a Connie but I do own a Freelancer, which to me is nearly the same thing just on a smaller scale. Being that it's a multi-person ship and can fill the roles of mercantile, exploration and be fairly decent in combat. They came out with similar variants for the Freelancer. Think Freelancer MIS kinda similar to the Phoenix, I guess?

I throw a lot of uncertainties in what I say because I know the Connie and Freelancer variants don't directly translate to one another. When they came out with the Freelancer variants my thought process behind the matter was unless I just REALLY want a specialized variant, I'm sticking with the base Freelancer model. That's exactly what I ended up doing. You can always re outfit the thing to suit different needs once the PU comes out.

EDIT: If this gives you any idea how much controversy surrounded the Phoenix variant they created a sticky dedicated to JUST the Phoenix. https://forums.robertsspaceindustri...88/phoenix-facts-aka-constellation-q-a#latest

well first you have to know that there is no combat version. theres only the exploration (aquila), mercantile (taurus), and the defualt. The phoenix is a luxery connie, with better shields, power plant, defensive capabilities. however, aside from no longer being on sale, it gave up cargo and offensive capabilities. It also comes with a exploration rover and a snubnose fighter, and a HOT TUB!!! the tuarus is essestially stripped of everything to make room for cargo it has weaker shields less missile hard points. it may also have slower but more efficient engines for them long hauls.it dosent carry anything special. The aquila is alot like the andromeda except it can only have 4 crew, one less missle hard point and it also has extended fuel tank and stronger sensors. and the andromeda is just the andromeda

Yea pretty much. I wasn't trying to make any concrete claims for the Phoenix. I just think that after what I had read that as they all stand now the Phoenix is probably the "best" suited for combat. Of course a base Connie re-equipped for combat will be more combat oriented but I was looking at them as they are currently offered.

Also from what I've read people seem to think Power Plant quality and size will be most responsible for how well your ship performs anything it does. So with a better power plant comes better offensive/defensive capabilities. According to the current ship spec sheet https://robertsspaceindustries.com/ship-specs the Phoenix variant has an equivalent size shield to the rest, with max power plant size of 7, compared to the rest being only 6. Despite being a bit shortchanged on weaponry, it also comes with an alternative snub fighter. It may be better than the other?

Is there a way to do a hull upgrade if you already own a Constellation and still be able to get a Phoenix? I only found this https://robertsspaceindustries.com/pledge/extras?product_id=51. The option is not there for me but I don't own a Constellation so I'm not sure if it would be blocked to some and viewable for others.

Unless it becomes available at another point in time even discussing the Phoenix may be a waste of time considering it as an upgrade option for you at this time.

Even if you were to use your Constellation for mercantile, I don't know if the 800 addition freight units would be worth giving up some fire power. Pirates abound, you better have an escort.

I missed the sale, but ultimately I am keeping my andromeda variant. Seriously, I'm gonna be like the Han Solo of NNG. xP

Well I'll stick with the Andromeda for a while. Both the Taurus and Aquila only have one turret. Aquila only has the bottom and the Taurus only has the top. Now Aquila would be good for the planet exploring but I like the 2x turret and the snub.

This is an opinion thread so lets keep the mentality that everyone has the right to their own.
