Are the avenger and 325 pretty similar?
I'm hoping to get a ship soon and have narrowed down to those two but can't decide.
I think the 325 is supposed to have better manoeuvrability and the avenger has more straight line speed.

I'd like something that can do some bit of exploration and other things but can also compete in a fight but I don't have more to spend than the cost of those two models.

Won't be going out looking for pilots to engage but want something to stand my ground if I am engaged while flying about, or if I am escorting someone.

From looking at them they both should be able to do the same jobs, might need some upgrades down the line, but not sure where any noticeable differences lie to choose between them.

Avenger can do some light transport and bounty hunting. it's a interceptor. Quick fly by attacks and hit and runs the 325A is more of a dog-fighting boat with maneuverability and speed.

The avenger is more well rounded as a Ex-police cruiser and the 325A is more of a sleek dogfighting sports car of spaceships.

Is there not a cargo area for the 325? Not as big as avenger but should be big enough for a person if bounty hunting.
I'd also like to know if 6 vs 4 upgrade slots is a big deal or not. I'd like to get a jump drive for either anyway.

Oh I am. But for the most part the 300 series is made for looks and speed. The avenger is even described as a bounty hunting vessel. As far as I know it's because of the cells and the 325 doesnt have cells.

I don't think that cells are necessary for bounty hunting, human cargo should be able to be stored in a cargo hold large enough. Just have to give them the night night gun first.

How they fly will not be properly comparable until players fly them. But wondering how their shields/armaments fair up againtst one another, does one have the edge or is it pretty much level?

at this point stats are meaningless, but in terms of fighting styles, 355 will probably win in a duel or straight up dogfight, but if the avenger gets first hit ad get the drop on him then the avenger will win. The avenger has the biggest weapon of it's class so getting the first hit on a unsuspecting ship will be huge.

The avenger can carry 2 more tonnes in cargo.

EDIT: can compare stats here https://robertsspaceindustries.com/ship-specs
